Our bodies lose well over a half-gallon of water each day through normal activities like breathing and perspiring. We lose even more when we exercise or play sports.
But many of us don’t get the hydration we need every day.
A 2000 survey found that only 34 percent of Americans drank the recommended eight 8-ounce daily servings of water. In 2010, data collected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that most children ages 4 through 17 were not drinking the recommended quantity of water.
But we are getting plenty of hyper-sweetened beverages. A 2008 study found that U.S. soft drink consumption—including both sugar-sweetened and artificially sweetened beverages—had risen 300 percent in the previous 20 years.
In a perfect world, we would all drink water to quench our thirst, but the preference for sweet is programmed into us by evolution, and has been shown to exist from birth.
Research conducted in 2011 found that even banning sugary beverages from schools didn’t seem to help. The study, conducted by researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago, found that students who were subjected to some kind of rule about sugar-sweetened beverages at school were actually more likely to consume sugary drinks on a daily basis.
At Grins, our goal is to help kids and adults alike to get the hydration they need, while helping them consume fewer calories from sugar than are found in some of their preferred beverages—even 100 percent fruit juice.
We set out to create a product with a great taste that would drive people to pick it up. We left out the carbonation, artificial sweeteners, high fructose corn syrup and other artificial colors and flavors often found in the beverage aisle, and we added a reasonable dose of essential vitamins for good measure.
The result is an appealing beverage with authentic flavor that rings in at 50 calories per 8-ounce serving—far fewer calories than you will find in the average soft drink, juice drink, or even in pure apple or orange juice.
We hope that our product will make it easier for kids, families and everybody else to make healthy choices and stay hydrated so they can keep doing the things that make them happy. Smiles are what The Official Beverage of Happy People is all about.
